Can a steel joint be welded without machining a bevel? The answer depends on the material, joint fit-up, power source and verified procedure. This technical note reviews a trial reported on our source website and explains what should be checked before transferring it to production.
Four pairs of 300 × 200 × 6 mm steel coupons were cleaned and assembled as flat, square-butt joints without an intentional gap. The report identifies ER70S-6 filler wire and an ESAB gas-shielded welding system. Welding parameters were varied between the four trials.
The reported trials produced different outcomes, including a narrow bead with poor edge fusion, burn-through and undercut, and a smoother bead with cracking. The fourth trial was reported to show a sound surface and no defects in its radiographic image. This comparison illustrates why a visually smooth weld is only one part of process assessment.
The article describes an exhaust casing approximately 4,350 mm long and 1,150 mm in diameter, assembled from three rolled sections of Grade B ship plate. Its cited settings belong to that specific setup. They are not a ready-to-use welding procedure for other materials, thicknesses or pressure equipment.
Start with the material grade, thickness, allowable mismatch and joint gap, then establish a trial plan and inspection criteria. Confirm penetration, fusion and required mechanical performance under the applicable manufacturing requirements before releasing the procedure. The opportunity is to reduce preparation and filler consumption where the validated joint allows it.
Share the material grade, thickness, joint drawing, current preparation method and inspection requirements. haibao robot can review whether a conventional, deep-penetration or plasma–TIG process is worth testing.
